Easy Tricks to Ripen Mangoes Naturally at Home (Image Internet)
New Delhi: Mangoes remain one of the most popular summer fruits due to their sweet taste and refreshing flavour. However, many mangoes sold in markets are often harvested before full ripening to ensure safe transport and longer shelf life. In some cases, artificial ripening agents are also used, leading many consumers to look for safer, natural alternatives at home.
Natural ripening methods are gaining popularity as they are considered healthier and help preserve the fruit’s original taste, aroma and nutritional value.
Experts and consumers often prefer naturally ripened mangoes because they develop sweetness gradually and evenly. This process enhances flavour, improves texture and avoids exposure to artificial chemicals.
Naturally ripened fruit is also believed to retain more of its natural aroma and is considered a safer option for families who prefer chemical-free produce.
A ripe mango typically releases a sweet fragrance near the stem. It feels slightly soft when gently pressed and may show subtle colour changes depending on the variety.
Once ripened, mangoes can be stored in a refrigerator for a few days to maintain freshness and prevent over-ripening.
One of the simplest methods is placing mangoes in a brown paper bag. The trapped ethylene gas helps speed up ripening within two to four days.
Another common method involves burying mangoes in uncooked rice. The rice helps maintain warmth, allowing the fruit to ripen in about two to three days.
Wrapping mangoes in newspaper and storing them in a warm, dry place is another traditional technique that promotes even ripening over three to five days.
Mangoes can also be kept with bananas or other ripe fruits, as these release natural gases that accelerate ripening. This method usually takes two to four days.
Alternatively, storing mangoes in a warm corner at room temperature helps them ripen naturally within four to seven days.
With simple household methods such as paper bags, rice containers, newspaper wrapping and natural fruit exposure, mangoes can be ripened safely without chemicals. These techniques ensure better taste, aroma and freshness while keeping the fruit natural.
