Satara: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday reached out to the family of a young doctor from Maharashtra’s Beed district, who allegedly died by suicide in Satara, assuring them of his support in seeking justice. The family has demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding her death.

Family Demands SIT Amid Concerns Over Evidence

The doctor’s family expressed fears that crucial evidence might have been tampered with, as more than a week had passed since her death. Speaking with Gandhi over the phone, her parents and siblings urged him to push the state government to form an SIT to ensure a transparent investigation.

Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, who visited the family at their home in Kavadgaon village, Beed district, facilitated the call between Gandhi and the family. The opposition leader assured them that he would raise the issue with authorities and advocate for a comprehensive inquiry.

Circumstances of the Doctor’s Death

The 28-year-old doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan town, Satara district, on the night of October 23. The postmortem report confirmed that she died by asphyxia due to hanging, suggesting suicide.

However, a message written on her palm has raised serious allegations. According to police, the note accused police sub-inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping her, while software engineer Prashant Bankar allegedly subjected her to mental harassment. Both men were arrested on October 25 in connection with the case.

Police have stated that there were no signs of forced entry into the hotel room, indicating that no other person was present during the incident.

Concerns Over Missing Data

The family has voiced strong concerns regarding potential tampering with the doctor’s mobile phone, claiming that critical information was deleted after her death. Her uncle alleged that the device had been unlocked using her fingerprint posthumously, resulting in the erasure of key data that could have been crucial for the investigation.

Local Protests Demand Justice

The incident has sparked protests in the doctor’s native region. Residents of Wadwani in Beed district observed a bandh on Tuesday, demanding an SIT probe and expressing outrage over the circumstances surrounding her death. Locals have called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
