Washington: The US House of Representatives has approved a new Russia sanctions legislation that could give the American administration wider powers to take trade action against countries continuing economic ties with Moscow. The move has brought India and China’s purchase of Russian crude oil into focus.
The legislation is designed to strengthen restrictions on Russia by targeting revenue sources linked to its energy exports. Supporters of the bill argue that limiting Russia’s oil earnings could increase economic pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The bill received approval in the US House after lawmakers backed measures aimed at expanding sanctions against Russia and entities connected to its energy sector.
A major provision in the bill allows the US President to consider imposing tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue importing Russian oil and gas.
