5 killed as two state-run buses from Maharashtra collide near Surat; One catches fire

At least five people were killed and over 10 injured after two Maharashtra state-run buses collided near Surat in Gujarat, with one bus overturning and catching fire on the highway.

Surat: At least five people lost their lives and more than 10 others sustained injuries after two Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses collided near Bardoli town in Gujarat’s Surat district on Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred on National Highway 53 near Uva village in Bardoli taluka. According to police officials, one of the buses overturned following the collision and soon caught fire, raising fears that some passengers may have been trapped inside.

Bus Overturns, Fire Breaks Out

Police said both vehicles involved in the accident belonged to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation. However, officials are yet to determine whether the crash was a head-on collision or if both buses were travelling in the same direction at the time of the incident.

“The exact nature of the collision is still being investigated. After the impact, one of the buses overturned and caught fire,” Bardoli Rural Police Inspector PN Jadeja told reporters.

Emergency teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the accident. Firefighters began efforts to control the blaze while rescue teams searched for trapped passengers.

Several Injured Shifted to Hospital

Authorities confirmed that at least five passengers died on the spot. More than 10 injured passengers were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police teams from Surat district and neighbouring Tapi district joined the rescue and relief operation. Officials said the condition of some injured passengers remains serious.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the accident is yet to be officially confirmed. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the collision.

The tragic incident once again highlights concerns over highway safety and long-distance public transport operations, especially on busy national highways connecting Gujarat and Maharashtra.
