Centre’s big court reform move: Eight High Courts welcome new leadership
New Delhi: The Indian judiciary witnessed a major leadership change as the Centre cleared the appointment of Chief Justices for eight High Courts across the country, marking one of the significant judicial reshuffles of the year, aimed at bringing new heads to several constitutional courts and strengthening the administrative structure of the High Court system.
The appointments were notified by the Central government on Saturday following the recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium. The process was completed under the constitutional framework involving the President of India and consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
The latest move has changed the leadership of eight important High Courts, with senior judges being elevated to the position of Chief Justice. The appointments are expected to impact judicial administration, case management and the overall functioning of courts across multiple states.
Among the major appointments, Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal of the Chhattisgarh High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. His elevation comes at a crucial time when the Rajasthan High Court had been functioning under acting leadership for an extended period.
Justice Agrawal’s appointment is expected to bring stability and regular leadership to the Rajasthan High Court. The development also comes amid discussions surrounding the functioning of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and administrative issues related to the court.
The Rajasthan High Court leadership issue had gained attention after Supreme Court judge Justice Sandeep Mehta raised concerns regarding certain administrative aspects and sought institutional consideration of the matter. Justice Sharma has denied the allegations and responded through the established judicial process.
While Justice Agrawal’s appointment fills the position of regular Chief Justice in Rajasthan, other issues connected with the controversy will continue to be handled through the appropriate institutional mechanism.
Justice V Kameswar Rao of the Delhi High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. His elevation brings an experienced judicial figure to lead the Bihar-based constitutional court.
Justice Ravindra V Ghuge of the Bombay High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Before this appointment, he was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He will take charge of one of India’s oldest and most significant High Courts.
Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the same High Court. Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra of the Orissa High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
Justice Alpesh Yashwant Kogje of the Gujarat High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati of the Rajasthan High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
The appointment of Chief Justices plays a crucial role in the functioning of High Courts. Apart from hearing cases, Chief Justices oversee administrative responsibilities, judicial work allocation, court management and efforts to improve efficiency.
The latest reshuffle comes at a time when the Indian judicial system is focusing on reducing case pendency, improving transparency and strengthening institutional accountability.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended these names through resolutions issued in August. After completing the required approval process, the Centre issued the final notifications.
Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal has extensive experience in law and judiciary. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court in September 2013 and became a permanent judge in March 2016.
Before becoming a judge, Justice Agrawal served as the Advocate General of Chhattisgarh and handled important constitutional, government and legal matters. His appointment as Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice is expected to begin a new phase of judicial administration in the state.
The newly appointed Chief Justices are expected to assume charge after completing the required formalities. Their leadership will shape the functioning of their respective High Courts and influence judicial administration in the coming months.
