New Delhi: Former UIDAI chairman and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani has proposed using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate examination question papers on the day of the test to prevent leaks and remove incentives for their illegal sale.

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday, Nilekani said a large question bank could be used to prepare papers at the last minute, making it difficult for anyone to obtain and sell a predetermined question paper in advance, as per report.

AI Could Help Prevent Examination Paper Leaks

"question papers crate an economic incentive for them to be sold. So, the way to solve this is to really have a massive bank of questions, and only at the last minute generate the question paper for that day", he said.

Nilekani said the approach would eliminate the need for a fixed question paper and reduce the financial incentives behind leaks. Under the proposed system, questions could be selected from a vast bank shortly before an examination, limiting opportunities for papers to be leaked in advance.

Nilekani Calls For Wider Computer-Based Testing

Nilekani also advocated expanding computer-based testing (CBT) across the country, highlighting the need for a broader network of examination centres to support the transition.

"The other thing is, of course, how to make sure all exams are done on CBT, and that requires a network of locations. we have 1,50,000 locations where a young boy or girl take a test. That needs to be expanded", he said.

Government Task Force To Recommend Examination Reforms

The government has appointed a high-powered task force under Nilekani to recommend reforms to India’s public examination system. The panel is expected to examine systemic weaknesses in the conduct of examinations and suggest measures to strengthen the process.

Nilekani expressed confidence that the government would act on the panel’s recommendations.
