New Delhi: One year has passed since the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI171, a tragedy that claimed 260 lives and became one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India's history. Yet despite months of investigation, the exact cause of the crash remains unclear.
On June 12, 2025, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner departed from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick Airport. Just 32 seconds after take-off, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into a residential area near the airport, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 individuals on the ground.
The accident left families, aviation experts and authorities searching for answers about what caused the catastrophic loss of control.
A preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in July 2025 provided important insights into the final moments of the flight.
Investigators found that both engine fuel control switches moved from the "RUN" position to "CUTOFF" shortly after take-off, cutting fuel supply to the engines and causing a sudden loss of thrust. The switches were later returned to "RUN" as pilots attempted to restart the engines, but the aircraft did not have enough time or altitude to recover.
One of the most discussed findings emerged from the cockpit voice recorder. According to investigators, one pilot was heard asking why the fuel had been cut off, while the other denied doing so.
The exchange raised fresh questions about how both fuel control switches were activated. Aviation specialists note that the switches are protected by locking mechanisms, making accidental activation unlikely. However, investigators have not reached any conclusion regarding pilot actions or intent.
Authorities have repeatedly cautioned against speculation, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing. No evidence has conclusively linked the crash to pilot error, mechanical failure or deliberate action.
The final report has been delayed as experts continue examining engine-related data and other technical evidence. Until those findings are released, the cause of the AI171 disaster remains one of Indian aviation's most significant unanswered questions.
