New Delhi: An Air India flight operating from Phuket, Thailand, encountered sudden turbulence while coming to Delhi on Tuesday, causing a brief change in altitude and leaving 10 passengers and four crew members with minor injuries.
The affected aircraft, Air India flight AI2379, experienced turbulence during its descent towards Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi. The sudden movement of the aircraft reportedly caused discomfort among passengers and resulted in minor injuries to some travellers and cabin crew members.

The Airbus A320 aircraft was carrying 134 passengers and landed safely at Delhi airport shortly after 11 am. Following the landing, airport medical teams and Air India ground staff immediately provided assistance to the affected passengers.
Around 8 to 10 passengers were taken to the Medanta medical facility located at the airport for precautionary medical assessment and necessary treatment. Officials confirmed that no serious injuries have been reported so far.
Air India officials said the flight experienced a brief turbulence-related event during the cruise phase of the journey, leading to a temporary change in altitude. The airline confirmed that all passengers and crew members safely disembarked after the aircraft reached Delhi.
The airline’s emergency response teams provided medical support to passengers requiring attention and coordinated with airport authorities. Air India is also cooperating with the concerned agencies as part of the standard aviation safety review process.
Aviation experts explain that turbulence occurs due to sudden changes in air movement, including clear air turbulence (CAT), weather-related disturbances, jet stream variations or atmospheric pressure changes. Such events can cause sudden vertical movements of aircraft, especially during cruising altitude or descent phases.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation regulator, may review operational details of the incident, including flight data records, crew reports and aircraft condition, as part of routine aviation safety procedures.
The incident comes amid growing focus on passenger safety and turbulence-related risks in commercial aviation. Airlines follow strict safety protocols, including mandatory seat belt instructions and cabin crew procedures, to minimise risks during unexpected air disturbances.
