Anantnag Police launch probe after political leader faces Rs 8.25 lakh scam allegations
Srinagar: Anantnag Police have registered a case against political leader Aabid Hussain Nengroo over allegations of cheating a person of Rs 8.25 lakh after promising a Special Police Officer (SPO) job and permission to set up tents during the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra in Pahalgam.
The FIR No. 283/2026 was lodged at Police Station Anantnag after a complaint was received alleging that money was taken on the assurance of securing an SPO position and obtaining approval for tent-related activities during the pilgrimage season.
According to police, the complainant alleged that despite receiving the money, the promised job opportunity and permission for tent installation were not provided. Following this, the matter was reported to the authorities, leading to the registration of the case.
Police have initiated an investigation to establish the facts, verify the alleged financial dealings and examine the circumstances surrounding the complaint. The allegations against the accused are yet to be proven, and the final outcome will depend on the evidence collected during the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The case revolves around allegations that money was taken from an individual after assurances of access to a government-related job opportunity and a business permission linked to the Amarnath Yatra. The complainant reportedly approached police after the promised benefits did not materialise despite the alleged payment.
The investigation will focus on several key questions, including whether any unofficial assurance was given regarding SPO recruitment, how the money was transferred, whether any documents or communications exist and whether other individuals were involved. A major part of the allegation involves the promise of a Special Police Officer position. During the annual pilgrimage, temporary facilities, including tents, food stalls and support services, operate after receiving necessary approvals from concerned authorities.
Police are now examining whether any unauthorised promise regarding tent permissions was allegedly made and whether the complainant was misled regarding official approvals.
The Yatra-related angle has increased public interest in the case as temporary businesses and service opportunities during the pilgrimage period attract significant demand every year.
After receiving the complaint, Anantnag Police registered FIR No. 283/2026 at Police Station Anantnag under relevant sections of law. Police have started collecting evidence and verifying details connected with the allegations.
Investigators are expected to examine financial records, communication details and statements of individuals connected with the case. Authorities have indicated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
