What is the Hindi-Marathi language controversy?

The Maharashtra government had recently said in an order that Hindi will now be taught as the third language along with Marathi and English in government primary schools in the state. This decision was taken in line with India's federal three-language policy. But after this decision in the state, protests started at the political and social level. Some organizations and local leaders alleged imposition of Hindi, after which the controversy escalated.

To keep the situation under control, the state government has withdrawn this decision for the time being and formed a committee to review the three-language policy. However, the controversy has not completely subsided yet.
