Assam Rifles jawan killed in Changlang border attack (Img: X)
New Delhi: An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured after a patrol team came under suspected militant fire along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident took place at around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah under Nampong circle, when personnel from the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling an area where border fencing work is underway.
Preliminary reports indicated that suspected militants opened fire on the patrol team, killing 42-year-old Havildar Jankhokai Kuki and injuring four other personnel. The injured were being evacuated for medical treatment, while details about their condition were awaited.
Security forces intensified operations in the area following the attack as efforts continued to gather information about the incident and identify those responsible.
Preliminary reports suggested that militants belonging to the NSCN (K-YA) may have been involved. However, officials had not formally confirmed the identity of the attackers. The Assam Rifles was yet to issue an official statement at the time of reporting.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said he had received information about the incident and instructed the officer-in-charge of Changlang police station to collect details.
"We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it," the SP said.
The Changlang sector along the India-Myanmar border remains sensitive because of the presence and movement of insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.
