Aaif Lone seeks accountability over alleged bureaucratic misconduct (Img: Dynamite News)
Srinagar: Social and political activist Aaif Lone has condemned the alleged verbal abuse of Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officer Beenish Wani by IAS officer Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, saying the episode raises serious concerns about the conduct of senior bureaucrats and their treatment of colleagues.
Lone said the controversy should not be viewed as an isolated incident involving two officers, arguing that it points to broader concerns about the exercise of authority within the administrative system.
“This is not just about Beenish Wani. It is about the way some officers behave with their colleagues under the cover of bureaucracy. A government position comes with responsibility, not the licence to insult or intimidate others,” Lone said.
He acknowledged that many IAS and IPS officers carry out their responsibilities with dedication, but stressed that allegations of misconduct involving any public servant must be examined fairly, irrespective of their rank or influence.

Lone said public office brings obligations and should not be used to intimidate or humiliate colleagues. He called for an impartial examination of the allegations and appropriate action if wrongdoing is established.
Lone also questioned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s response to the controversy, arguing that the matter deserved attention from the outset rather than only after it spread across social media and attracted widespread condemnation.
“The Chief Minister should have intervened at the right time. When people started speaking out, the issue gained momentum. People want to know what action the government can actually take and who will be held accountable,” he said.
His remarks have brought the government’s handling of complaints involving senior bureaucrats into focus, particularly the question of what action can be taken when allegations concern officers in positions of authority.
The controversy erupted after a video purportedly showing Ranjan using abusive language during an official online meeting circulated publicly. The footage prompted criticism across Jammu and Kashmir, along with demands for an impartial inquiry and appropriate action.
The authenticity of the video and the circumstances surrounding the exchange have also been discussed publicly. The allegations have raised questions about professional conduct and the working relationship between IAS and JKAS officers.
The incident has renewed attention on workplace behaviour within the administration and the mechanisms available to address complaints against senior officials.
Lone called for a fair investigation, maintaining that no officer should be permitted to use official authority to humiliate colleagues. He urged the administration to treat such complaints seriously and ensure accountability regardless of an officer’s designation.
The controversy has also prompted questions about the powers of Jammu and Kashmir’s elected government and the procedures available to address complaints involving senior bureaucrats.
Lone’s intervention adds to the calls for transparency and accountability as the administration faces demands to clarify how the allegations will be examined and what steps, if any, will follow.
