Bharat Taxi launches with Rs 10 lakh insurance for drivers and better income opportunities

India has launched Bharat Taxi, a cooperative, driver-centric ride-hailing service aimed at challenging Ola and Uber. The platform offers drivers Rs 10 lakh insurance cover, retirement benefits, and dedicated assistance, while allowing work across apps.

New Delhi: A new cooperative taxi service, Bharat Taxi, officially launched in the country today. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched this driver-centric ride-hailing platform at an event held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. Based on the vision of prosperity through cooperation, this initiative has been launched to directly challenge private cab services like Ola and Uber.

Service designed with interests of drivers at center

Bharat Taxi is being described as the country's first driver-first cooperative taxi service. Its aim is to provide better income and social security to drivers, also known as "sarathi." To date, more than 400,000 drivers have joined the platform, and this number is continuously growing. Bharat Taxi's pilot project, which was running in Delhi-NCR since November 2025, received positive feedback from passengers.

Drivers will receive an insurance cover of ₹10 lakh

The government will provide a total insurance cover of ₹10 lakh to drivers associated with Bharat Taxi. This includes personal accident insurance of ₹5 lakh and family health insurance of ₹5 lakh. Its purpose is to ensure the financial security of drivers and their families.

Retirement Savings and Driver Assistance System

Drivers associated with Bharat Taxi will also receive benefits such as health insurance, accident insurance, retirement savings, and a dedicated driver assist system. Importantly, drivers are given complete freedom to work on other ride-hailing apps. Help centers have been set up at seven key locations in Delhi, providing emergency support and verified ride data.

Affordable and Transparent Fares for Passengers

Bharat Taxi offers bike, auto, and car options for passengers. The company claims that fares will be up to 30 percent cheaper than the market rate. Additionally, no surge pricing has been implemented, meaning no additional fares will be charged during rain, traffic, or peak times.

Ola and Uber will face tough challenge

The government says that Bharat Taxi will not only provide affordable and safe travel to passengers, but also provide drivers with the opportunity to earn a respectable income. In the future, the platform will expand to other cities across the country.
