J&K Police Gets New Command: 14 Officers Transferred In Major Reshuffle
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced a major restructuring of its police leadership, transferring 14 senior officers in one of the significant reshuffles of the Union Territory’s security establishment. The changes affect some of the most important positions in the police department, including CID, Armed Police, Security Wing, Jammu Zone, Kashmir Zone and Anti-Corruption Bureau.
The transfer order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department includes 11 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and three Jammu and Kashmir Police Service (JKPS) officers. The appointments come into immediate effect and are expected to bring changes in operational planning, intelligence coordination and law enforcement management.
The reshuffle has drawn attention because Jammu and Kashmir continues to remain a highly sensitive security region, where police leadership plays a crucial role in counter-terror operations, intelligence gathering, public safety and coordination with central security agencies.
One of the biggest changes in the reshuffle is the appointment of M.K. Sinha, IPS (AGMUT: 1996), as the new Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha has been moved from the post of ADGP Headquarters and will replace Nitish Kumar, IPS (AGMUT: 1999).
Nitish Kumar has now been appointed as ADGP Armed Police Jammu and Kashmir against an available vacancy. The CID is a key intelligence and investigation agency responsible for handling sensitive cases, gathering intelligence inputs and supporting security operations across the Union Territory.
The reshuffle has also brought new leadership for the two major police zones of Jammu and Kashmir. Sujit Kumar, IPS (AGMUT: 2007), who was earlier serving as Inspector General of Police Security Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as IGP Kashmir Zone.
Tejinder Singh, IPS (AGMUT: 2008), earlier posted as IGP CID Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as IGP Jammu Zone. He replaces Bhim Sen Tuti, IPS (AGMUT: 2004), who has now been transferred as IG Headquarters Jammu and Kashmir.
The appointment of new zonal police chiefs is considered important as both Jammu and Kashmir Zones handle major responsibilities related to security operations, intelligence coordination, law-and-order management and counter-terror activities.
Vivek Gupta, IPS (AGMUT: 2007), who was serving as IGP Railways Jammu and Kashmir, has been transferred as IGP Security Jammu and Kashmir. He replaces Sujit Kumar.
Uttam Chand, IPS (AGMUT: 2002), who was holding the post of IGP Police Operations and Services at Police Headquarters, has been appointed as IGP Railways Jammu and Kashmir. He will continue to hold additional charge of IGP Police Operations and Services until further orders.
The Security Wing is responsible for crucial assignments including protection of important personalities, security assessments and coordination with intelligence agencies.
In another major appointment, Shakti Kumar Pathak, IPS (AGMUT: 2009), has been designated as Director of the Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The Bureau handles investigations into corruption-related complaints involving government departments and public officials. The appointment comes amid continued efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and administrative monitoring in the Union Territory.
The government has also announced multiple changes at the DIG and SSP levels. Mubassir Latifi Ameer, IPS (AGMUT: 2011), who was serving as DIG Personnel at Police Headquarters and holding additional charge of DIG Training, has been transferred as DIG IR Kashmir.
Sahil Sarangal, IPS (AGMUT: 2017), earlier posted as SSP Handwara, has been appointed as SSP Pulwama. Sunny Gupta, IPS (AGMUT: 2020), who was serving as Additional SP Anantnag, has been appointed as SSP Kishtwar, replacing Naresh Singh.
Tahir Saleem Khan, JKPS (2001), earlier working as Special Officer to IG Kashmir Zone, has been appointed as SSP Handwara. Muzaffar Ahmad Shah, JKPS (2004), who was serving as SSP SCW Kashmir, has been posted as Special Officer to IG Kashmir Zone. Naresh Singh, JKPS (2004), earlier SSP Kishtwar, has now been appointed as SSP Rajouri.
The latest changes come at a time when Jammu and Kashmir remains a major security focus area for India. The region continues to witness challenges related to terrorism, border security, intelligence operations and maintaining public order.
Senior police appointments in departments like CID, Security Wing and zonal commands directly influence security strategies, intelligence networks and operational preparedness.
The reshuffle is also being viewed as an administrative move aimed at improving coordination among different police formations and bringing fresh leadership to sensitive positions.
