Patna: Twelve people, including eight women, died after being struck by lightning in Bihar on Tuesday, while seven others sustained burns.
The casualties include five people from Banka district, three each from Lakhisarai and Nawada, and one from Jamui. At the time of the incident, they were engaged in paddy transplantation or other agricultural activities in the fields.
Notably, 16 people have lost their lives and over 17 have been injured in Banka district alone over the past 20 days.
Mani Manjhi, Rajendra Manjhi, and Indrajit Manjhi died after being struck by lightning while transplanting paddy near Dariyapur village in Nawada district. They had come to Rajauli from Madheshra village in Sitamarhi district in search of work and were working in a field owned by farmer Manoj Yadav.
Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is deeply saddened by the untimely deaths of 12 people due to lightning strikes across various parts of Bihar. He has expressed deep condolences and directed that an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh each be provided immediately to the next of kin of the deceased.
Fatalities occurred as follows: five in Banka, three each in Lakhisarai and Nawada, and one in Jamui. The Chief Minister stated that he stands with the affected families during this time of crisis.
He has appealed to the public to stay indoors and remain safe during inclement weather. He urged people to follow the guidelines issued periodically by the Disaster Management Department to protect themselves from lightning strikes during bad weather.
