Bengaluru: As the Cauvery water-sharing issue turns into a major dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, several Kannada organisations have given a call for Karnataka Bandh on August 13.
The bandh came after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12. Vatal Nagaraj, convenor of Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha, said that the bandh would be observed at any cost, and urged people to support their strike.
Banks, hospitals, pharmacies, public transport and other essential services are likely to remain unaffected during the agitation, however, schools may be partially closed. As the protests broke out in Cauvery region, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that it was the duty of the state government to protect the state's farmers and abide by court orders.
Noting that 12,000 cusecs water had been released, the Chief Minister said that he was monitoring the inflow and would take a call after discussing the situation with the Irrigation Minister and other State officials.
State Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the Chief Minister would hold a meeting on Wednesday with senior advocates, top officials and engineers in the Water Resource Department to discuss the legal battle the state would undertake.
The Chief Minister's Office shared the gist of deliberations during the 55th meeting of CWMA on Wednesday. It said the authority had affirmed and endorsed the decision of Cauvery water regulation committee, directing Karnataka to ensure releases from its reservoirs so that the flows at the rate of 12,000 cusecs were realised at Biligundlu starting from August 12, from 8 am onwards for the next 15 days.
