CBI arrests Central Railway engineer in Rs 40 Lakh bribery case; Cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.47 crore seized

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer of Central Railway along with two private individuals in a Rs 10 lakh bribery case linked to a railway tender.

Accused Identified

According to the CBI, the accused have been identified as Ramesh Kumar Chauve, Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer of Central Railway, along with two others Anshul Varma and Kanay Varma.

As per CBI, the case was registered on 9 March, 2026, against the officer of the Indian Railway Services of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) and others for alleged irregularities in the award of a tender worth Rs 40.54 crore to a private company.

Bribe Demand of Rs 40 Lakh Alleged

Investigators said the officer allegedly worked with representatives of the private company and demanded a Rs 40 lakh bribe, about 1% of the tender value, to help the company secure the contract.

The CBI laid a trap and caught the officer after he allegedly accepted Rs 10 lakh as part of the bribe from a private person. The amount was recovered from his office chamber. Following the operation, the officer and two private individuals were taken into custody.

Search operations were conducted at five locations in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Karjat, linked to the accused persons.

Cash and Jewellery Worth Rs 1.47 Crore Seized

During the searches, officials recovered Rs 90.79 lakh in cash, gold jewellery weighing 241.30 grams, and silver jewellery weighing 2,577 grams, together valued at ₹42.52 lakh, along with documents related to investments. Additionally, Rs 3.85 lakh in cash was recovered from the officer’s office chamber.

The total value of the seized assets is estimated at Rs 1.47 crore. Investigators also recovered several documents considered relevant to the case.

The investigation is currently underway.
