Centre lifts detention of Sonam Wangchuk after 6 months to restore peace and dialogue in Ladakh

New Delhi: The Central Government has decided to end the detention of Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned social activist and engineer from Ladakh. The Home Ministry has announced that his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) is being revoked with immediate effect. The government stated that this decision was taken with the aim of creating an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh.

Arrested under NSA in September 2025

It is noteworthy that Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act on September 26, 2025. Two days earlier, on September 24, 2025, a serious law and order situation had arisen in Leh. Following this, he was detained under the NSA to maintain public order on the orders of the Leh District Magistrate.

According to government information, Wangchuk had served approximately half of his detention period. During this period, the administration has continuously monitored the situation in the region and continued dialogue with representatives of various communities.

Government Emphasizes Dialogue and Peace

The Home Ministry stated in a statement that the government seeks to foster an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh, enabling constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. With this objective in mind, the government has decided to end their detention.

The government stated that in recent months, shutdowns and protests have prevailed in the region, affecting various sections of society, particularly students, youth preparing for jobs, businessmen, tourism professionals, and tourists.

The central government has also reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary steps to protect the interests of the people of Ladakh. The government stated that the dialogue process will continue to resolve issues related to the region.

Solution will be found through a high-powered committee

According to the government, dialogue will continue through various forums, including the high-powered committee, to resolve various issues related to Ladakh. The government hopes that dialogue in a peaceful environment will lead to a solution to the region's problems.
