Dehradun: A major accident has occurred at the under-construction tunnel of THDC’s Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, where a land subsidence incident trapped several workers inside the tunnel. According to initial reports, three workers have lost their lives in the mishap.

Rescue teams have so far safely evacuated 16 workers trapped inside the tunnel, while efforts are continuing on a war footing to rescue those still stranded. Teams from the district administration, Uttarakhand Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian Army and other agencies are engaged in the operation.

A large-scale rescue operation is underway at the site, with emergency teams working continuously to reach the remaining workers and ensure their safe evacuation. Most of the workers affected in the incident are reportedly from Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Expressing concern over the tragic incident, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed officials to accelerate relief and rescue operations. He instructed the district administration and concerned departments to maintain close coordination and take immediate action to save the lives of workers trapped inside the tunnel.

The Chief Minister said that considering the seriousness of the situation, NDRF and SDRF teams were immediately deployed to the accident site. He added that the state government is closely monitoring the rescue operation and every possible effort is being made to provide assistance and ensure the safety of all workers.

CM Dhami also prayed for the safety of those trapped and assured that the government is taking all necessary steps with utmost sensitivity and urgency.
