Chamoli: A major tragedy struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district after a tunnel under construction for the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project collapsed, leaving several workers trapped underground. The incident has claimed the lives of seven workers, while rescue teams continue efforts to locate those still missing.
The collapse occurred in the Pipalkoti area of Chamoli, where debris and water entered the under-construction tunnel, creating severe challenges for rescue personnel. Officials said around 11 workers sustained injuries, while several others remain feared trapped inside.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the site after receiving information about the collapse.
NDRF personnel faced difficult conditions as the tunnel was heavily flooded, with water levels rising above chest height in certain sections. Equipped with specialised rescue gear, teams entered the tunnel and recovered bodies of workers who were trapped beneath the water and debris.
Rescue operations are continuing on a priority basis as authorities attempt to reach workers who may still be trapped inside the tunnel.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed concern over the incident and directed officials to intensify relief and rescue efforts. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that district administration officials and concerned agencies have been instructed to work in coordination for swift operations.
NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed to assist in evacuation and search operations. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rescue teams continue their efforts amid challenging conditions.
The Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project tunnel collapse has once again highlighted the risks faced by workers engaged in large infrastructure projects in the Himalayan region.
