New Delhi: A Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) on Monday extended the judicial custody of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka by two more days in connection with an alleged security breach at Jantar Mantar during protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The two leaders were produced before a newly appointed Special Executive Magistrate at Mandir Marg Police Station. The extension comes after they were sent to five days of judicial custody on October 13.

Why Were CJP Leaders Arrested?

Das and Ranka were detained following a protest at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators opposed the SIR exercise. The two leaders allegedly climbed over a locked gate to enter the site, which had earlier been de-notified as an authorised protest venue.

CJP workers reportedly displayed the national flag and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar before police intervened. The leaders were subsequently taken into custody and produced before the magistrate.

CJP Alleges Deliberate Delay in Bail Proceedings

The custody extension comes amid allegations by the CJP that the bail process has been deliberately delayed to prevent the release of its two convenors. The party has questioned the handling of the proceedings as the leaders remain in custody.

Police reportedly sought additional time in custody, leading to the latest extension. The case centres on the alleged breach of security arrangements at Jantar Mantar and the circumstances surrounding the protest.

What Happens Next?

The two leaders will remain in judicial custody for another two days following Monday’s order. The developments have drawn attention to the ongoing dispute over the SIR exercise, protest restrictions and the detention of political activists.

Further proceedings will determine the next steps in the case and whether the leaders secure release after the extended custody period.
