Congress party alleges that internet curbs at Jantar Mantar are a deliberate attempt to silence the student protest, under the pretext of Law and order.

New Delhi: Congress on Thursday accused the Narendra Modi government of imposing internet restrictions around Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to suppress the voices of protesting students, alleging that the move was aimed at preventing information about the Delhi Police's alleged actions against demonstrators from reaching the Public.

"Prime Minister Modi has cut off the internet around Jantar Mantar, which is creating immense panic," said K C Venugopal, the AICC General Secretary(Organisation), and described the alleged move as an attack on democratic freedoms.

Alleging that the restrictions were intended to curb dissent, Venugopal wrote, "This is a direct assault on freedom of speech, to silence the voice of India's youth and hide the Delhi police's brutalities.

He also warned the Government against taking further action to suppress the ongoing agitation. The Congress has been mounting a sustained attack on the Centre over the handling of student protests linked to alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and paper leak cases.

The opposition party has accused the government of suppressing peaceful protests and has demanded accountability over the alleged use of force against students.

The Centre, however, has maintained that it is committed to protecting the interests of students and preserving law and order.
