New Delhi: India observes Constitution Day every year on November 26, also referred to as Samvidhan Divas. The day is celebrated to honor the great leaders who drafted the Indian Constitution and strengthened the democratic foundation of the nation. On November 26, 1949, the Constitution was officially adopted, marking a historic shift from colonial rule to self-governance. Constitution Day reminds citizens of the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution.

History of Constitution Day

The journey of framing India’s Constitution began towards the end of British rule. Following the Government of India Act, 1935, it became clear that the country required a framework to become a sovereign and democratic republic. In this direction, the Constituent Assembly was formed in December 1946.

The Assembly comprised 389 members, including prominent leaders such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and several other influential figures. The first session was held on December 9, 1946, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as its president; he later became India’s first President.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was entrusted with preparing the draft Constitution. After nearly three years of effort, he presented the draft in 1948. The draft underwent detailed discussions in 11 sessions, with several amendments made. Finally, the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949.

The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is why Republic Day is celebrated annually on January 26.

Why Constitution Day Is Celebrated

Constitution Day serves as a reminder that India’s progress and democratic journey are based on the principles enshrined in the Constitution. The day educates citizens about their rights and duties and provides an opportunity to honor the vision and sacrifices of the Constitution’s framers.

It also inspires the younger generation to protect the nation’s unity, integrity, and democratic values, which is the responsibility of every citizen.

  • Promotes respect for democracy and the rule of law

  • Increases citizens’ awareness of constitutional rights
