New Delhi: A devastating fire at the Flourish Stay Hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, claimed the lives of 21 people, most of whom were foreign nationals. Initial reports indicate that the blaze began in the hotel’s restaurant and quickly spread to the upper floors and basement, leaving little time for evacuation.

Unfortunately, such fire tragedies are not uncommon, particularly during the summer, when incidents caused by exploding air conditioners and electrical faults rise sharply. Experts warn that panic-driven mistakes during a fire can be fatal. Here’s what you must avoid to protect yourself and your loved ones:

1. Never Run Upstairs

Many instinctively try to flee upward during a fire, but smoke rises, making upper floors the most dangerous. Always move downward and away from the fire to find a safe exit.

2. Avoid Using Elevators

Elevators can malfunction or fill with smoke during a fire. Always take the stairwell, even if it seems slower—your safety depends on it.

3. Do Not Open Windows

Opening windows may seem helpful, but it fuels the fire by letting in oxygen, causing flames to intensify. Keep windows closed and focus on exiting safely.

4. Never Pour Water on Electrical Fires

Water conducts electricity and can cause severe shocks or worsen an electrical fire. Use a Class E fire extinguisher or dry sand instead.

5. Don’t Risk Your Life for Belongings

In the chaos, people often try to rescue valuables. In a fire, your priority must be life over possessions. Attempting to save objects can cost lives.

6. Avoid Hiding Under Furniture

Hiding under tables or beds may seem safe, but it can trap you if the furniture catches fire or the ceiling collapses. It also makes rescue efforts harder.
