New Delhi:
Government Tightens Rules to Tackle Pollution
The Delhi Government has increased the Environmental Compensation Charge (ECC) on commercial vehicles following directions from the Supreme Court of India. The move aims to curb rising air pollution, especially from diesel-powered heavy vehicles.
Under the new structure, ECC for light commercial vehicles and 2-axle trucks has been raised from ₹1,400 to ₹2,000. For larger trucks (3-axle and above), the charge has increased from ₹2,600 to ₹4,000, putting greater financial pressure on high-polluting vehicles.
The government has also mandated a 5% annual increase in ECC, which will be automatically applied and rounded off. This long-term strategy is designed to gradually push transporters toward cleaner and more sustainable alternatives.
Push Towards Cleaner Transport
By making entry into Delhi more expensive for polluting vehicles, authorities aim to encourage the adoption of greener fuels and modern vehicles. Transport companies may now rethink logistics to manage rising operational costs.
Expected Impact on Environment
Officials believe this step will significantly help reduce pollution levels in Delhi. As costs rise, many transporters may shift to cleaner options, contributing to improved air quality over time.
