A major voter list revision in Delhi puts the spotlight on electoral verification and citizen participation (Img: X)
New Delhi: Delhi’s draft electoral roll has sparked a major debate after the names of 47.7 lakh electors were excluded from the preliminary voter list released by the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The excluded voters have been given time till September 30 to submit claims and request inclusion in the electoral roll.
The missing names were categorised under ASDDO (Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate and Other) cases. These voters were not included in the draft electoral roll released after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The revision process involved door-to-door verification across Delhi. Officials conducted the exercise between June 30 and August 17, after which the names of voters whose enumeration forms were received and digitised were included in the draft list.
The Delhi CEO has said that citizens whose names do not appear in the draft voter list can file claims for inclusion by submitting Form 6 along with required documents.
The claims and objections window will remain open till September 30. After reviewing applications, the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on November 4.
The draft voter list currently contains around 97.5 lakh electors whose verification forms were successfully received and processed during the revision drive.
Along with voter list changes, Delhi has also witnessed an increase in polling infrastructure. The number of polling stations has gone up from 13,033 to 14,947, while polling locations increased from 2,696 to 2,856.
The exclusion of such a large number of names is expected to become a major political issue in Delhi. Questions are likely to focus on voter verification, migration, duplicate registrations and whether genuine voters are able to complete the claim process before the deadline.
The Election authorities will examine all claims and objections received during the revision period before publishing the final electoral roll. Voters have been advised to check their names in the draft list and complete the correction process within the given deadline.
