New Delhi: Delhi and surrounding NCR regions are reeling under intense heatwave conditions, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the next five days. The warning comes as temperatures in the national capital continue to rise sharply, with the mercury expected to touch nearly 46 degrees Celsius this week.

According to the weather department, daytime temperatures are unlikely to fall below 43 degrees Celsius over the coming days, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

No Immediate Relief Expected

The IMD has forecast that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue for at least the next two days, with hot weather expected to persist even after that. Officials also stated that there is no significant change expected in maximum or minimum temperatures over the next week.

Weather experts attribute the extreme conditions to the absence of active western disturbances or cyclonic systems over north India. Hot and dry winds from western and northwestern regions continue to sweep across Delhi, intensifying the heat.

What IMD’s Orange Alert Means

An orange alert issued by the IMD signals that residents should remain prepared for worsening weather conditions that could affect daily life. The alert also indicates a high possibility of heat-related health concerns, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses.

The weather department defines a heatwave when temperatures cross 40 degrees Celsius and remain at least 4.5 degrees above normal levels.

Authorities Issue Safety Advisory

The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during afternoon hours. Residents have been urged to wear loose cotton clothes, cover their heads while stepping outdoors and stay hydrated even if they do not feel thirsty.

Officials also recommended keeping fire extinguishers ready at homes and inside vehicles due to the elevated risk posed by extreme heat conditions.

Power Demand Surges Amid Rising Temperatures

The scorching heat has also increased electricity consumption across the city. According to the State Load Dispatch Centre, Delhi recorded its highest power demand of the season at 7,776 MW on Tuesday afternoon, reflecting the growing dependence on cooling systems during the heatwave.
