New Delhi: Delhi Metro services faced fresh restrictions on Monday, as entry and exit at six stations were suspended until 4 pm due to security concerns. The move comes a day after the Supreme Court directed authorities to ensure the normal functioning of metro and railway services amid protests in the national capital.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said the restrictions were being implemented for security reasons and that the situation would be reviewed by security agencies. However, interchange facilities will remain available at all six affected stations.
The stations where entry and exit will remain closed until 4 pm are Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road. The restrictions are likely to inconvenience commuters travelling through central Delhi, particularly during the morning and afternoon hours.
Passengers using these stations have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly and check for updates before travelling. The availability of interchange facilities means passengers can still change metro lines at the affected stations, although they cannot enter or exit through them during the restriction period.
The closures come amid heightened security arrangements for a planned Opposition march towards the Supreme Court. Congress and other INDIA bloc leaders intend to raise concerns over alleged irregularities in the electoral process, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Delhi Traffic Police has also warned that vehicle movement could be affected at several locations across New Delhi and central Delhi. Diversions may be introduced depending on the prevailing security situation.
On Sunday, the Supreme Court issued directions calling for normal metro and railway services, free movement of people and uninterrupted internet connectivity, subject to lawful restrictions required to maintain public order. The court also stressed that peaceful, unarmed protesters should not be detained except in accordance with the law.
The latest metro restrictions come against the backdrop of earlier closures during protests on October 10, when restrictions affected dozens of stations across the capital.
The renewed curbs are expected to keep security and public transport arrangements in focus as the political confrontation over electoral issues continues in Delhi.
