New Delhi: A sudden pre-monsoon dust storm accompanied by rain swept across Delhi-NCR on Saturday afternoon, turning clear skies into dark, hazy conditions within minutes. The weather shift brought immediate relief from the ongoing heatwave. Residents reported sudden darkness and gusty winds sweeping through high-rise corridors.
According to early inputs from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system was triggered by intense surface heating over northwest India, creating unstable atmospheric conditions. Wind speeds were reported between 50 and 70 kmph, causing strong gusts across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and nearby areas. The IMD also issued a short-term warning for dust storms and thunderstorms across NCR regions.
Shortly after the dust wall moved through, several parts of central and western Delhi along with Noida experienced spells of light to moderate rain. Temperatures reportedly dropped by several degrees within a short span, easing the prolonged heat stress. Residents in several areas noted sudden wind bursts followed by a rapid drop in temperature.
The sudden weather change disrupted visibility on major roads, leading to traffic slowdowns and temporary power interruptions in some pockets. Authorities also cautioned residents about possible waterlogging, fallen branches, and slippery road conditions. Municipal teams were alerted to manage traffic congestion and clear fallen debris quickly.
Weather officials indicated that such convective activity may continue intermittently over the region, with easterly winds helping suppress dust and improve air quality temporarily. However, short-lived storms may recur during peak heating hours. Experts suggest similar pre-monsoon activity may continue until the arrival of sustained monsoon showers.
Commuters were advised to exercise caution during evening travel hours as wet roads and low visibility persisted in several stretches across the capital region. Authorities urged people to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions stabilized fully across NCR. Light improvement in air quality was also reported after the dust settled gradually.
