Delhi Weather Today: City boils at 45°C as severe heatwave grips capital, IMD issues orange alert

New Delhi: The national capital is witnessing an intense heatwave as temperatures in several parts of the city crossed the 45-degree Celsius mark for the first time this month. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning residents of severe heatwave conditions likely to continue over the next few days.

Safdarjung, considered the city’s base weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The reading was nearly five degrees above normal and significantly higher than the previous day’s temperature.

Several Areas Cross 45°C Mark

Extreme temperatures were reported across multiple locations in the national capital. The Ridge area emerged as the hottest spot in Delhi, recording 46.5 degrees Celsius. Ayanagar registered 45.5 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road recorded 45.2 degrees Celsius.

According to weather officials, dry northwesterly winds originating from Rajasthan and adjoining areas are carrying hot air into Delhi, worsening daytime conditions and increasing discomfort levels across the city.

Night temperatures have also remained unusually high. Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius, making conditions uncomfortable even after sunset.

Heatwave Likely to Continue for a Week

The IMD said Delhi has already experienced four heatwave days this year, including the latest spell. Weather experts believe there may be little immediate relief, as no rainfall or thunderstorm activity is expected in the coming days.

Meteorologists have forecast maximum temperatures of around 44 degrees Celsius till May 25, accompanied by strong surface winds during afternoon and evening hours. Experts say prolonged dry conditions are preventing the ground from releasing accumulated heat, leading to persistently warm nights.

Air Quality Deteriorates Amid Dusty Conditions

Alongside the rising temperatures, Delhi’s air quality has also worsened. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) entered the “poor” category with a reading of 208 due to dry and dusty winds.

In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage 1 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR. Authorities have intensified measures such as dust control, water sprinkling and pollution monitoring to prevent further deterioration in air quality.

The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
