New Delhi: The Supreme Court has raised serious concerns over public safety in Delhi-NCR following recent cases of sexual offences and questioned the effectiveness of measures taken by law enforcement agencies and administrative authorities. The court observed that repeated incidents highlight the need for accountability and stronger preventive steps.
The apex court took suo motu cognisance of recent crime reports and directed that the issue be examined through judicial proceedings. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran expressed concern over the safety of citizens, especially women and children.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned whether the existing safety mechanisms in Delhi were sufficient to prevent such incidents. The court stressed that public spaces should not become unsafe due to gaps in surveillance, lighting or policing.
The court also sought details about steps being taken by authorities to improve security arrangements in vulnerable areas, including public places and transport facilities.
The Supreme Court’s intervention came after reports of multiple cases involving women and minors in Delhi-NCR. The bench highlighted the importance of ensuring that citizens can live without fear and called for concrete measures instead of only statements of concern.

The court also referred to the need for fixing responsibility on authorities responsible for crime prevention, maintaining public order and protecting vulnerable sections.
As part of the proceedings, authorities have been asked to review safety arrangements, including vulnerable-area mapping, CCTV availability, street lighting and patrolling systems. The objective is to identify gaps and improve security infrastructure.
The Supreme Court’s remarks have once again brought Delhi’s public safety measures into focus, with authorities facing questions over prevention strategies and response mechanisms.
