New Delhi: Delhi’s decision to remove Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest sites has raised questions about the accessibility of the three alternative venues announced by the police. While Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi have been identified for demonstrations, booking costs, limited availability and distance from the national capital’s key administrative centres could create challenges for protest groups.

According to the Delhi Police order issued on October 11, the three grounds will serve as designated locations for protests and demonstrations, replacing Jantar Mantar Road.

Ramlila Maidan: Closest but Costly

Located around 4 km from Jantar Mantar, Ramlila Maidan is the closest of the three alternatives to central Delhi. However, the 12-acre venue requires advance booking and payment. An MCD official cited by Hindustan Times said the daily booking charge is Rs 50,000, with a refundable security deposit of Rs 55,000.

Availability is another concern. India Today reported that only December 29, 30 and 31 remained available for booking in 2026, as the ground was occupied by other events and festive-season activities.

The venue’s limited shade and requirement to book the entire available section could also make it difficult for smaller groups.

Burari and CBD Ground: Distance and Expenses

Burari Ground, also known as Nirankari Ground, spans around 50 acres and is approximately 18 km from Jantar Mantar. Although its size can accommodate large gatherings, its location away from central Delhi raises concerns about visibility and public participation.

CBD Ground in east Delhi faces different challenges. Booking around 3,000 square metres reportedly costs Rs 1.87 lakh per day, including security charges. Existing event bookings may further restrict availability.

Will the New Venues Affect Protests?

The relocation has triggered concerns that demonstrators could find it harder to reach policymakers and attract public attention. The challenge for authorities will be to manage public order while ensuring that citizens retain meaningful access to spaces for peaceful protest.
