Dilip Ghosh Sworn In as Minister in Suvendu Adhikari Government
Kolkata: West Bengal politics has entered a new phase with the swearing-in of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and his cabinet. Among the five prominent BJP leaders taking oath as ministers, Dilip Ghosh stands out as a veteran leader whose political journey has shaped the party’s presence in the state. Alongside Ghosh, Nishith Pramanik, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, and Khudiram Tudu also assumed ministerial responsibilities.
Dilip Ghosh’s rise in Bengal politics is rooted in his long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Starting as a Pracharak in 1984, Ghosh served in various capacities, including a key stint from 1999 to 2007 as the in-charge for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During this period, he also worked closely with former RSS Chief KS Sudarshan.
In 2014, Ghosh formally entered electoral politics by joining the BJP as Bengal’s General Secretary. Within a year, he was appointed State President, a position he held again after being re-elected in 2020. Known for his grassroots connect, he has been particularly influential in the Junglemahal and North Bengal regions.
Ghosh demonstrated his electoral strength by defeating seven-time MLA Gyan Singh Sohanpal from Kharagpur Sadar, cementing his reputation as a formidable BJP leader. Under his leadership, the party achieved historic gains in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, securing 18 seats and increasing its vote share from 10.16% in 2016 to 40.25%. Despite a slight drop to 12 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP maintained a strong vote share of 39.9%, underscoring Ghosh’s enduring influence.
According to his Election Commission affidavit, Dilip Ghosh and his family hold assets worth ₹3.07 crore, including movable assets of Rs 56.74 lakh and immovable assets of Rs 2.55 crore. The family owns one car valued at Rs 14.62 lakh and maintains modest cash holdings.
As Dilip Ghosh embarks on his new role as a minister, the focus will be on how he leverages his organizational experience and electoral acumen to further the development of Bengal and strengthen the BJP’s presence in the state.
