New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has postponed two youth-focused voter awareness programmes scheduled in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and Varanasi, where Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was expected to address students and first-time voters.
The poll body said the decision was taken due to routine administrative adjustments, including venue availability, official schedules and other logistical factors. However, the postponement has attracted attention as it comes amid political discussions over the functioning of the Election Commission and election-related processes.
The two events were part of the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) 2.0 initiative, an awareness campaign designed to educate young citizens about voting rights, democratic values and the electoral system.
## Meerut And Varanasi Events Rescheduled By Election Panel
According to officials, the decision to postpone the two Uttar Pradesh conferences was taken on September 21.
The Election Commission clarified that changes in dates of official programmes are a regular administrative exercise and depend on several factors, including venue arrangements, availability of senior officials, operational planning and local conditions.
The poll body also referred to earlier instances where Electoral Literacy Club events were rescheduled in states and Union Territories such as Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Uttarakhand.
The clarification came after questions emerged over the postponement of the programmes involving the Chief Election Commissioner’s interaction with young voters.

The postponement comes at a time when the Election Commission has been facing discussions related to election processes, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

The Election Commission has maintained that the postponement of the Uttar Pradesh programmes was linked to administrative factors and not connected to any other matter.

The programme brought together students and teachers from schools and colleges across Uttar Pradesh.
During the event, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar highlighted the importance of building awareness among young citizens about India’s electoral framework.
The Election Commission said students were encouraged to understand the constitutional foundation of elections, voter registration, voting procedures and the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy.
