JDU President meets PM Modi
New Delhi: JDU National President and former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament. The meeting comes a day after the BJP suffered an embarrassing defeat in the Bankipur bypoll won by Jan Suraj party chief Prashant Kishor.
Nitish Kumar, while posting a picture of his meeting with the Prime Minister on Social media, wrote, "Today I had a courtesy meeting with the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji in his office chamber at the Parliament House located in New Delhi".
JDU sources said that the meeting assumed significance in the backdrop of the party's defeat in Bankipur assembly, a stronghold of the BJP. Nitish Kumar, who was chief minister for 18 years, reportedly explained the reasons for the defeat and the real feedback behind the "BJP's defeat".
The by-election defeat in Bankipur, considered a BJP bastion, is being seen as a major embarrassment for the saffron party as the seat was held by the party's current National president
Nitin Nabin. The by-poll was necessitated after Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha after he assumed the charge of party chief.
The BJP and JDU are running a coalition government in Bihar led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhry. It is understood that the Nitish Kumar-Prime Minister Modi meeting discussed many important topics related to the development of north-east India, including Bihar. Apart from Sanjay Jha, Union Minister
and senior JDU leader Lalan Singh was also present during the meeting.
This by-election was seen as the first time in the last 20 years when Nitish Kumaris not in the picture as Bihar Chief Minister. It was his good governance with social justice and development plank that has so far helped the NDA reap rich political dividends in Bihar.
The BJP is worried that this by-election not only badly reflected on the party president Nitin Nabin but also on the new Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhry, who succeeded Nitish Kumar.
