From MCD mayor to union minister; Who is Harsh Malhotra, now leads Delhi BJP

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has found a new state president. Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra has now been entrusted with the command of the Delhi BJP.

BJP National President Nitin Naveen appointed Harsh Malhotra as the Delhi State President on Thursday.

Malhotra possesses extensive organizational experience. His political journey spans various roles, ranging from Councilor and Mayor to Minister.

He previously served as the State General Secretary within Sachdeva's team. He resigned from the post of State General Secretary after being elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) from East Delhi and subsequently becoming a Union Minister of State.

Who is Harsh Malhotra?

He holds a B.Sc. (Botany) and an LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi. He has been active in politics since his student days. In 2012, he was elected as a Municipal Councilor from the Welcome Ward, and in 2015–16, he was appointed as the Mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

He launched the 'Suposhan Karyakram' (Nutrition Program) to combat malnutrition among school children.

In the 2024 general elections, he was elected to the 18th Lok Sabha from East Delhi, succeeding former cricketer Gautam Gambhir. Currently, he serves as a Union Minister of State in the Central Government, holding portfolios in both the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Prior to his appointment as the Delhi BJP President, he also served as the Chairman of the 'Dehdaan Samiti' (Body Donation Committee) and played an active role in raising public awareness regarding organ donation.

Two Promotions in Two Years... Now Comes the Real Test

Malhotra hails from the Punjabi community and is a veteran leader within the party. After winning his first Lok Sabha election from East Delhi in 2024, Harsh Malhotra was inducted as a Union Minister of State. Following this, he has now been handed the reins of the Delhi BJP.

He now faces the responsibility of playing a pivotal role in leading the party to victory in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections and the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for next year.

Replaced Virendra Sachdeva
Previously, this responsibility was held by Virendra Sachdeva, under whose leadership the party secured a victory in  2025 Delhi Assembly elections.

Virendra Sachdeva was appointed as the Delhi BJP State President in March 2023. Sachdeva had been serving as the Acting President since the resignation of former President Adesh Gupta following the MCD elections.
