New Delhi: Fuel prices across India saw another sharp increase on Tuesday, with petrol and diesel becoming costlier by an average of 90 paise per litre. The latest revision comes just days after the central government raised fuel prices by Rs 3 per litre on May 15, adding further pressure on consumers already struggling with inflation.
In the national capital, Delhi, petrol prices increased by 87 paise from Rs 97.77 to Rs 98.64 per litre, while diesel prices rose by 91 paise to reach Rs 91.58 per litre.
Mumbai recorded a hike of 91 paise in petrol prices, taking the rate to Rs 107.59 per litre. Diesel prices in the city also surged by 94 paise to Rs 94.08 per litre.
In Chennai, petrol prices climbed by 82 paise to Rs 104.49 per litre, while diesel became costlier by 86 paise, reaching Rs 96.11 per litre.
Kolkata witnessed one of the highest increases, with petrol prices rising by 96 paise to Rs 109.70 per litre. Diesel prices in the city also jumped by 94 paise to Rs 96.07 per litre.
Jaipur also saw a significant revision in fuel prices. Petrol became dearer by 94 paise and now costs Rs 108.91 per litre, while diesel prices increased by 92 paise to Rs 94.15 per litre.
The repeated fuel price hikes are being linked to the ongoing energy crisis caused by tensions in West Asia. The blockade around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most crucial oil trade routes — has disrupted global energy markets.
Brent crude oil prices have remained above USD 100 per barrel amid the continuing US-Israel-Iran conflict, which began earlier this year. Although efforts are underway to negotiate a long-term ceasefire, uncertainty in the region continues to impact global oil supplies.
Despite rising prices, the Indian government has assured citizens that there is no shortage of fuel in the country and that energy supplies remain stable.
