New Delhi: The Central government expressed reservations to Meta about the temporary removal of a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Facebook as well as failures in dealing with child sexual abuse material in a high-level meeting held with top officials of the social media platform.
The meeting, which was for around 45 minutes, was held against the backdrop of growing attention towards Meta's content moderation policies and its adherence to India’s digital laws.
According to reports, the key issues under discussion included the removal of a promotional video by PM Modi targeting the Gen Z generation from Facebook, non-compliance with specific government demands and removal of unsuitable content on Meta social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram.
The government also had reservations about the efficacy of the systems developed by Meta for the detection and removal of child sexual abuse material.
In the Meta delegation were Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan, along with Neil Potts, Vice President, Rafael Frankel, Senior Director, Aman Jain, and Priya Srinivasan.
From the government’s side were S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Information Technology, and other senior officials.
The meeting has taken place against the backdrop of the ongoing engagement between the Indian government and major tech companies regarding the topics of content moderation and user safety. It is believed that the officials have stressed the importance of quick actions in regard to harmful content, making sure that there is increased responsibility of the digital platforms working in India.
An official statement on the outcomes of the discussions has not been published at the time of writing.
