Greater Noida: A major fire broke out late at night in the Shahberi furniture market area of Greater Noida West, creating panic among shopkeepers and nearby residents. The blaze reportedly started inside a plastic goods shop and quickly spread to nearby furniture stores packed with highly flammable material.

According to officials, the incident took place around 10 pm. Thick smoke and massive flames rising from the market could be seen from several kilometres away as chaos gripped the area.

Short circuit suspected behind blaze

Preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire inside one of the shops. Due to the presence of wooden furniture, plastic items, foam and other combustible materials, the flames spread rapidly across the crowded market area within minutes.

Local residents and shopkeepers rushed out after hearing loud crackling sounds and seeing smoke covering the market lanes. Several people living in nearby residential societies recorded videos of the incident from balconies and rooftops as panic spread through the locality.

Over 30 fire tenders deployed

After receiving information about the incident, the fire department launched a massive emergency response operation. More than 30 fire tenders from Noida and Ghaziabad were sent to the spot to control the blaze.

However, firefighters faced major challenges due to narrow roads leading to the market area. Authorities later created a green corridor to ensure fire engines could move quickly and reach the affected site without delay.

Firefighters continued the operation for nearly 40 minutes before finally bringing the fire under control. Officials said the timely response helped prevent the flames from spreading to nearby residential buildings and other shops.

Eight shops destroyed, no casualties reported

Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar confirmed that nearly eight shops were completely gutted in the fire. Goods worth lakhs of rupees were reportedly destroyed in the incident, causing heavy losses to traders.

Despite the scale of the fire, no injuries or casualties have been reported so far. Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the blaze while assessing the total damage caused by the incident.
