Gurugram: Heavy rainfall once again exposed Gurugram’s drainage problems as several parts of the city witnessed severe waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption on Monday. Following the situation, the district administration advised offices to allow employees to work from home and asked schools to conduct classes through online mode.
The administration said Gurugram received around 70 mm rainfall by 1:30 pm, causing flooding in several key areas.
Several important locations, including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road, were among the worst affected areas.
Videos and pictures shared on social media showed vehicles stranded on flooded roads, with many commuters forced to abandon their cars due to rising water levels.
Students were also seen facing difficulties while returning from schools, with some moving towards elevated areas to avoid flooded streets and hidden potholes.
The heavy rain also affected traffic movement on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, where thousands of vehicles moved slowly due to water accumulation.
The stretch between Signature Tower and Hero Honda Chowk, which normally takes around 15 minutes to cover, reportedly took nearly 50 minutes due to congestion.
A section near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro Station, was submerged, affecting traffic flow on the busy route.
Although rainfall continued for only about an hour, residents criticised the repeated flooding problem in Gurugram, saying the city’s infrastructure fails whenever there is intense rain.
The issue has once again raised questions over drainage systems, road planning and monsoon preparedness in the Millennium City.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in several parts of Delhi-NCR.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and check weather and traffic updates before travelling.
