New Delhi: Speculation over a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle has intensified following the resignation of Union Minister L Murugan, with Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emerging as a potential contender for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by him in Madhya Pradesh. Political circles are abuzz with the possibility that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could make changes to his ministerial team before Diwali. However, neither the government nor the BJP has officially confirmed a reshuffle or Puri’s possible nomination to the Upper House.
Puri’s parliamentary position has become a key talking point as his current Rajya Sabha term is due to end next month. According to the political speculation, the BJP could consider sending him to the Upper House from Madhya Pradesh, where Murugan was elected in 2024. Puri’s possible renomination is also being discussed in the context of BJP’s efforts to strengthen its political presence in Punjab ahead of the state’s next Assembly elections. As a prominent Sikh face in the Union Cabinet, Puri could be an important figure in the party’s broader political strategy.
BJP had also been expected by some observers to retain Puri through Uttar Pradesh during the recent Rajya Sabha biennial elections, when the party secured eight seats. That possibility did not materialise, adding to questions about the party’s plans for his parliamentary future.
Murugan’s resignation has renewed attention on other recent ministerial departures. George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu have also resigned from their ministerial positions, according to the developments cited in political discussions surrounding the possible reshuffle. Meanwhile, Pankaj Chaudhary and Harsh Malhotra have been appointed to lead BJP’s Uttar Pradesh and Delhi units respectively. These organisational changes have further fuelled speculation about possible adjustments to the Union Cabinet.
The developments have prompted political observers to examine whether the BJP is preparing to combine organisational restructuring with changes to the ministerial team.
The possibility of a reshuffle before Diwali has become a subject of discussion, with several ministerial positions reportedly under consideration. If carried out, the exercise would be the first major reshuffle of the Union Cabinet since Narendra Modi began his third consecutive term as Prime Minister in June 2024, with 71 members in his ministerial team.
For now, Puri’s possible Rajya Sabha nomination and the timing of any cabinet changes remain unconfirmed. The BJP’s eventual decisions will determine whether the current political speculation translates into formal appointments.
