New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the national capital ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit. The meeting began with a warm welcome, including a handshake and an embrace between the two leaders, highlighting the close ties between India and Russia.

Putin arrived in India for a three-day visit to participate in the BRICS Summit and hold discussions with PM Modi on expanding bilateral cooperation in key areas, including trade, investment, energy and defence.

Putin’s First BRICS Summit Visit Outside Russia Since Ukraine War

The Russian President’s participation holds significance as this marks his first in-person attendance at a BRICS Summit outside Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

Putin is accompanied by a high-level delegation, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening economic partnerships and maintaining strategic cooperation between the two countries amid changing global geopolitics.

Defence, Oil and Trade Likely to Dominate Talks

The Modi-Putin meeting comes at a time when India-Russia relations remain focused on defence cooperation, energy security and expanding trade links. Both sides are expected to review ongoing projects and explore new areas of collaboration.

The meeting also takes place against the backdrop of global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty and shifting alliances.

With leaders from major emerging economies gathering in New Delhi, the Modi-Putin talks are being closely watched for their impact on India-Russia relations and broader BRICS cooperation.
