Bareilly: Security has been heightened across Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly division following violent clashes stemming from the 'I Love Muhammad' poster controversy. With Dussehra celebrations underway, additional precautions have been implemented to maintain public order.

The unrest, which led to stone-pelting and confrontations with police, prompted authorities to declare a high alert in the region. In anticipation of Dussehra, a major Hindu festival, security has been intensified across four districts: Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Budaun.

Police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed to monitor sensitive areas.

Background of the Unrest

The disturbances began on September 26 when a protest over the 'I Love Muhammad' posters, initially called by cleric Tauqeer Khan, was canceled. Despite the cancellation, approximately 2,000 individuals gathered outside a mosque in Bareilly's Kotwali area after Friday prayers. The situation escalated into stone-pelting and clashes with police forces.

In relation to the violence in Bareilly on September 26, the Uttar Pradesh police have so far taken 81 people into custody. Officials have confirmed that internet services have been restored after being suspended to curb rumours and unrest.

Following an altercation in the CB Ganj area on Wednesday, two people who were allegedly involved in the violence were taken into custody. Both men are being treated in police custody after being shot.

Suspected rioters and those who support them have been the target of an ongoing crackdown. Following separate police encounters, Shamsad, the district chief of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), and Tajeem, another suspect, were taken into custody on Tuesday. According to officials, Tauqeer Raza Khan, the leader of the IMC, several of his close associates, and even a relative have also been arrested.

Authorities have warned that any negligence in maintaining public order will result in stern action. Intelligence agencies have been placed on alert, and armed police forces are stationed at sensitive locations to prevent the spread of unrest.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the disturbances witnessed in Bareilly do not spill over into neighboring districts. The state government has urged citizens to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
