New Delhi: The monsoon has once again intensified across several parts of India ahead of the Raksha Bandhan festival, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in multiple states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for 19 states on August 26, warning of intense rain activity, hailstorms and gusty winds.
According to the weather department, wind speeds may reach 70 to 75 kilometres per hour in several affected regions, which could disrupt normal life, transportation and outdoor activities.
The sudden increase in monsoon activity has been linked to a low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to influence weather conditions across eastern and central India, leading to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.
Several areas may witness heavy downpours accompanied by lightning and strong winds. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious during stormy conditions.
Hill states including Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are likely to experience intense rainfall in the coming days. The IMD has warned that heavy showers may continue until August 31.
Districts such as Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli and Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand face the possibility of heavy rain, strong winds and landslides due to unstable weather conditions.
In Jharkhand, rainfall activity is expected to continue between August 26 and 30, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where heavy rainfall and thunderstorms may affect travel plans during the festival season.
Several districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut, Agra, Kanpur, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur, may witness heavy showers. Bihar is also expected to receive widespread rainfall, with warnings of lightning and hailstorms in some areas.
Farmers, commuters and travellers have been advised to stay alert and avoid unnecessary movement during severe weather conditions.
In Delhi-NCR, monsoon activity has reduced slightly but weather conditions remain cloudy. The capital region is likely to witness cloudy skies on August 26 and 27, with chances of light showers during the afternoon.
Moderate winds from the southeast may provide relief from humidity, but people heading out for Raksha Bandhan shopping have been advised to carry umbrellas and remain prepared for sudden rainfall.
