New Delhi: India’s weather pattern is set for another major change as the India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across 13 states. Wind speeds of 60 to 80 kmph are expected in several areas as a new weather system over the Bay of Bengal continues to strengthen.
The alert has come at a time when the southwest monsoon is gradually withdrawing from parts of the country. However, before completely retreating, the monsoon system is likely to trigger another spell of intense rainfall in several eastern, central and southern regions.
The developing weather situation has increased concerns over waterlogging, traffic disruptions, crop damage and landslide risks, especially in vulnerable hilly areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow local weather updates.
Weather experts have reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to become more organised in the coming days. The system may intensify into a depression and could further strengthen into a deep depression within the next 48 hours, according to weather projections.
The system is expected to move towards the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Its impact is likely to increase rainfall activity in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and neighbouring regions from September 24 onwards. Meteorologists are closely tracking the movement, intensity and possible impact of the system as it develops over the sea.
While parts of North India are witnessing the withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon, several eastern states may continue to receive rainfall due to the new weather disturbance. The monsoon has already started retreating from parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Weather conditions in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also expected to become comparatively drier over the next few days.
Delhi residents may experience clearer skies and sunshine, although weather patterns could change depending on the movement of the Bay of Bengal system. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, districts including Gorakhpur, Deoria and Varanasi may receive light rainfall initially, with rainfall activity expected to increase after September 24.
Odisha is likely to remain one of the key states under watch as the weather system approaches the eastern coast. Several districts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh, may experience continued rainfall activity until September 26. Heavy showers could impact daily life, transportation and local infrastructure in affected areas.
Bihar may witness scattered rainfall initially, but weather conditions are expected to become more active on September 24 and 25 due to the strengthening system. Residents have been advised to remain alert and avoid ignoring local weather warnings, especially during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The hill state of Uttarakhand remains sensitive due to the possibility of rainfall-related challenges. Areas including Dehradun and Nainital may witness increased rainfall activity, which could raise the risk of landslides, falling debris and temporary road blockages in mountainous regions.
Travellers heading towards hilly areas have been advised to check weather conditions before starting their journey and avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall periods.
The next few days will be important as the Bay of Bengal weather system continues to develop and move closer to the coast. The IMD is monitoring the situation continuously and may issue further updates depending on the intensity and movement of the system.
