New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across large parts of India on Saturday, August 22, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places in several states.
According to the weather department, a system over northeast Madhya Pradesh is supporting rainfall activity across central and northern India, while another spell of widespread rain is likely over parts of eastern and northeastern regions.
For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places on August 22.
Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are also likely to experience scattered rainfall, with some areas witnessing intense showers. Other northern states including East Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive isolated heavy rainfall.
Uttarakhand is also likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
Rain activity is expected to remain strong over Madhya Pradesh. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in East Madhya Pradesh, while West Madhya Pradesh may also receive heavy showers.
Parts of Chhattisgarh are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning.

Heavy rainfall at isolated places is also possible in these regions. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may also receive heavy rain, while Odisha and Jharkhand are expected to witness scattered rainfall. Gangetic West Bengal could experience thunderstorms with lightning.
The ongoing rainfall activity is linked to a low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions.
The associated cyclonic circulation is extending up to around 4.5 km above mean sea level, helping strengthen monsoon activity.
The monsoon trough, an important weather system responsible for organising rainfall, is currently passing through areas including Amritsar, Muzaffarnagar and Kanpur, before extending towards the low-pressure system and the northeast Bay of Bengal.
These weather systems are maintaining strong monsoon conditions across central and northern India.
The IMD has warned that the active monsoon phase is likely to continue.
Widespread rainfall is expected across parts of central, eastern and northeastern India in the coming days, while Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to witness a more widespread rainy spell.
