New Delhi: India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today. But from 15 August 1947 till now, India has fought some wars to keep our country's existence.

The nation has been involved in five major wars after independence. Here are some names of conflicts.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965
The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, also known as the Second Kashmir War, was an armed conflict that lasted from 5 August to 23 September 1965. The war was primarily fought over the Kashmir region, following Pakistan's intrusion into Indian territory under "Operation Gibraltar". India retaliated by attacking Pakistan, sparking a wider war.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, also known as the Third Indo-Pakistani War, lasted from December 3, 1971 to December 16, 1971. The war took place primarily in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where India supported the Mukti Bahini in the Bangladesh Liberation War. Pakistan began the war by attacking Indian Air Force bases on December 3, after which India retaliated by attacking East Pakistan. On December 16, 1971, Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka, resulting in the creation of Bangladesh.

The Kargil War of 1999
The Kargil War of 1999 was an armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district of Kashmir from May to July 1999. In this war, the Pakistani army and Pakistani-backed militants infiltrated Indian territory. The Indian Army and Air Force successfully repelled the Pakistani intruders and retook their land.
