New Delhi: Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin arrived in India on Monday for a three-day State visit aimed at taking the long-standing India-Switzerland partnership into a new phase. His arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the visiting leader.

The visit comes at a significant moment for bilateral economic relations, with India and Switzerland looking to expand cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, innovation and mobility. Parmelin is accompanied by a high-level delegation of senior officials and business leaders, underlining the strong commercial focus of his visit.

For Parmelin, the India trip is more than a routine diplomatic engagement. It is his first State visit to the country and comes as India and the European Free Trade Association, or EFTA, enter the second year of their landmark Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

Why Parmelin’s India Visit Matters

India and Switzerland have maintained close diplomatic and economic relations for decades, with regular high-level exchanges helping expand cooperation across multiple sectors.

Parmelin has highlighted the importance of strengthening the partnership and using the visit to discuss bilateral as well as global issues. The two countries are expected to explore fresh areas of cooperation while reviewing progress in existing economic and strategic engagements.

The business dimension is particularly important because Switzerland is India’s largest trade and investment partner among the four EFTA countries.

PM Modi, Parmelin to Hold Key Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Parmelin are scheduled to hold bilateral discussions during the visit. Trade and investment are expected to be among the major issues on the table, alongside science, technology, innovation and mobility.

The discussions will also cover culture and people-to-people relations, while regional and global developments are expected to feature in the wider diplomatic conversation.

The talks could also provide an opportunity to identify new areas where Indian and Swiss companies, research institutions and technology sectors can work together.

India-EFTA TEPA Takes Centre Stage

One of the biggest talking points during Parmelin’s visit is the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, known as TEPA. The agreement brings India together with Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. It was signed on March 10, 2024, and officially came into force on October 1, 2025.

The timing of Parmelin’s visit is significant because the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit will be held on October 7. The summit will coincide with the first anniversary of TEPA coming into force.

The agreement is expected to support greater market access, strengthen investment flows and create new opportunities for businesses on both sides. For India, deeper engagement with EFTA economies also fits into its broader push to expand trade partnerships and attract international investment.

Switzerland’s Economic Importance for India

Switzerland occupies an important position within the EFTA bloc when it comes to India’s economic engagement. Its strengths in finance, advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, precision engineering, research and innovation create potential areas for deeper collaboration with Indian businesses and institutions.

The bilateral relationship is also expanding beyond conventional trade. Emerging sectors such as technology, innovation and mobility are increasingly becoming part of the India-Switzerland engagement.

Parmelin to Meet Murmu and Jaishankar

The Swiss President will also meet President Droupadi Murmu during his stay. President Murmu is scheduled to host an official banquet in his honour. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also call on Parmelin, adding another layer of diplomatic engagement to the visit.

The series of meetings reflects the importance both countries attach to maintaining regular high-level political dialogue. Although this is Parmelin’s first State visit to India, it is his second visit to the country in 2026.

He had travelled to New Delhi in February to participate in the AI Impact Summit. His return to India within the same year highlights the increasing interaction between the two countries, particularly in technology and innovation.

This time, however, the agenda is broader, covering the overall economic relationship as well as the implementation of the India-EFTA trade agreement.

India-Switzerland Ties Have a Long History

The latest visit builds on a history of high-level engagement between New Delhi and Bern. The President of India last undertook a State visit to Switzerland in 2019, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Switzerland in 2016 and 2018.

The latest diplomatic engagement is expected to build on these exchanges and explore new opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The next major focus will be the Modi-Parmelin bilateral meeting and the India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on October 7. The discussions could shape the next phase of India-Switzerland economic engagement, particularly in trade, investment, technology, innovation and mobility.

With TEPA completing its first year, businesses and investors will also be watching for signs of deeper market integration and new commercial opportunities between India and the EFTA countries.
