New Delhi: India and the United States began a fresh round of high-level trade negotiations in New Delhi as both countries seek to finalise the framework for a proposed interim trade agreement aimed at deepening bilateral economic ties.
The discussions, scheduled from June 1 to June 4, are focused on resolving pending issues in the proposed pact and preparing the legal framework for a broader trade partnership in the future.
India’s delegation is being led by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, while the United States team is headed by Brendan Lynch, the chief US trade negotiator for the discussions.

Key areas expected to be discussed include customs procedures, trade facilitation measures, investment promotion, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation.
Trade representatives are also reviewing the impact of recent changes in the United States tariff structure and assessing how these developments could influence the proposed interim agreement. The two sides are expected to work on legal texts related to the pact that have already been discussed during earlier rounds of engagement.
India and the United States had earlier agreed in February to work toward a framework for a trade agreement designed to strengthen commercial and strategic relations.
Following that understanding, officials from both countries held another round of discussions in Washington DC in April to advance negotiations on specific sectors and trade concerns.

The latest round of talks comes at a time when global trade dynamics are shifting rapidly due to changing tariff policies, supply chain concerns and evolving geopolitical developments.
An interim trade agreement between India and the US is expected to pave the way for a more comprehensive bilateral trade deal covering goods, services and investments.
Industries such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, manufacturing and engineering goods are likely to benefit from improved trade access and reduced restrictions.
