UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July
New Delhi: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) achieved a historic milestone in July 2026 by recording its highest-ever monthly transaction volume and one of its biggest transaction values, further strengthening India’s position as a global leader in digital payments and financial technology. According to official data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the real-time digital payment platform processed 23.66 billion transactions during the month, with a total transaction value of ₹29.88 lakh crore, reflecting sustained growth in India's cashless economy and digital financial infrastructure.
The July performance surpassed the previous monthly transaction volume record of 23.20 billion set in May 2026 and exceeded June’s 22.72 billion transactions. On a month-on-month basis, transaction volume increased by around 4.1 percent, while the transaction value rose approximately 3.3 percent from ₹28.92 lakh crore recorded in June. Compared with July last year, transaction value jumped nearly 19 percent from ₹25.08 lakh crore, while transaction volume registered an annual growth of around 22 percent, highlighting the rapid expansion of digital payment adoption across the country.
Official statistics also showed that the UPI network handled an average of nearly 763 million transactions every day during July, with the average daily transaction value touching approximately ₹96,383 crore. These figures underline the platform’s ability to process massive transaction loads while maintaining real-time settlement capabilities through a highly scalable and resilient payment infrastructure.
The latest growth indicates that UPI has become the preferred digital payment system for millions of individuals, businesses, retailers, small merchants, street vendors and service providers. Industry experts believe the continued rise in transaction volume is being driven by everyday payments such as grocery purchases, utility bill payments, transport fares, online shopping, education fees, healthcare payments and merchant QR-code transactions rather than seasonal spending or festive demand. The increasing penetration of digital payments in Tier-2, Tier-3 cities and rural India has also significantly contributed to the platform’s consistent expansion.
Payments industry leaders have observed that the next phase of UPI growth will depend on strengthening user trust, improving cybersecurity measures, enhancing fraud prevention mechanisms, expanding multilingual accessibility and increasing digital financial awareness at the grassroots level. Experts believe that wider adoption among underserved populations will further promote financial inclusion, reduce dependence on cash and accelerate India's transition towards a digitally empowered economy.
UPI has also significantly expanded its international footprint and is now operational across nearly ten countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia and the Maldives. In some countries, the platform supports merchant payments, while others have integrated cross-border remittance corridors and person-to-person payment systems. These international partnerships are helping Indian travellers make seamless local payments using their domestic bank accounts while also reducing remittance costs for overseas Indians. The growing global acceptance of UPI is strengthening India's influence in the international fintech ecosystem and supporting cross-border trade, tourism and financial connectivity.
The National Payments Corporation of India, established as an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), functions as the apex organisation responsible for operating retail payment and settlement systems in India. NPCI manages the UPI platform, which enables instant fund transfers between bank accounts, peer-to-peer transactions, merchant payments and real-time digital settlements under the regulatory framework of the RBI. The payment ecosystem operates under established banking regulations, electronic payment guidelines, compliance standards and cybersecurity protocols to ensure secure, efficient and transparent digital transactions.
The record-breaking July performance reinforces UPI’s dominance as India's largest digital payment platform and demonstrates the country's rapidly evolving fintech ecosystem. The continued rise in transaction volumes, expanding merchant acceptance, robust payment infrastructure and growing international integration indicate that UPI will remain the backbone of India's digital economy while driving financial inclusion, innovation and cashless transactions on an unprecedented scale.
